The George N. Meissner Collection at Washington University contains a wide variety of manuscripts relating to a range of American and European politicians, artists, writers, and notables. The collection contains only one manuscript by Walt Whitman.

This is a printed proof with heavy corrections in Whitman's hand of the poem, "Thou Mother with Thy Equal Brood," which was first published in the 1881–82 edition of Leaves of Grass. The poem is a revision of "As a Strong Bird on Pinions Free," which was delivered at the Dartmouth College commencement in June 1872.
