On one side of this scrap are notes about the tulip tree (Liriodendron),
which Whitman used in "The Lesson of a
Tree," first published in
Specimen
Days & Collect
in 1882–1883. It was later reprinted in
Complete Prose Works
(1892). The other
side of the scrap bears a quotation from John Addington Symonds's
Studies of the Greek Poets,
the first
edition of which was published in 1873.
